Jazz is America’s greatest art form, and Whitefish has a long history of excellence in music education, especially jazz. For several summers, WHS band director Mark McCrady has led an intrepid group of middle school students through a fun, exciting week of improvisation, music, and performances in a day-camp setting This year the Whitefish Jazz Camp (August 17th – 20th) will have two guest teachers. Rob Tapper, director of jazz from Univeristy of Montana, and Erica von Kleist, saxophone, flute and jazz master. Together they will inspire both middle and high school students through learning music by greats such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. All students will experiment with improvisation, rhythm, ensemble playing, and most of all, HAVE FUN!
WHEN: August 17th – 21st. Middle School Camp 9am-Noon, High School Camp 1:00pm – 4:00pm
WHERE: Whitefish High School band room. 1143 E. Fourth Street, Whitefish.
WHO: Led by WHS band director Mark McCrady, with special guests Rob Tapper (director of jazz at University of Montana) and Erica von Kleist (saxopnone, flute and clarinet master). Open to ALL instrumentalists in middle or high school who have completed at least one method book.
WHAT: Jam sessions, games, ensemble playing, cool music videos, theory and improvisation! (Be sure to practice your instrument this summer so you are ready to play) WHY: To play america’s greatest artform…JAZZ!
COST: $60 – middle school camp, $75 – high school camp.
